Sanchez Wojciechoski is a 17 year old Upcoming Senior at Ypsilanti Community High School, a current Ypsilanti resident who’s lived here for seven years. Mr. Wojciechoski was born in Detroit, Michigan but moved around frequently as a young boy. He and his family finally settled down in the small city in Ypsilanti, Michigan.
Sanchez sees that in Ypsilanti there is intense gang violence with people who don’t belong in gangs, and younger kids who are trying to be hard, to be “down”.
Walking the streets, he feels very safe, but at night he is a little less confident in walking.
He believes that Willow Run Community Schools and Ypsilanti Public Schools should have never combined.
“When Willow Run Community Schools and Ypsilanti Public Schools combined, it brought the rival gangs under one roof.” said Mr. Wojciechoski
Sanchez feels that he wouldn’t leave Ypsilanti because he has been here for years now, causing him to become attached to the little city. He doesn’t think that leaving would help any of the current problems.
Mr. Wojciechoski does not believe teachers here have the student’s best interests at heart, and that teachers just automatically assume all of the students are bad.
There are pros and cons for living in Ypsilanti. Some pros are in his opinion: there are cool people, nice stores, and it is considered to be a family town. Some cons are: there are thieves, and lack of trust.
He believes Ypsilanti would be a better place if there were more programs for the youth to get involved in like leadership programs, and to offer a more variety of sports into the school district.
He personally feels that he can be successful if he stays in Ypsilanti.
We asked Sanchez what last remark he had, “All I have to do is keep a positive mind set, and stay out of drama.”
This concludes M2Y weekly engagement interview.
Thank You.
