For the very first Youth Engagement interview, I had the chance to interview DeAaron Washington. He is a 17 year old male, who was born and raised here in Ypsilanti, Michigan, and has also graduated from Belleville High School this year.
“ Ypsilanti is pretty dangerous, because its to the point kids get abducted, and teens with potential are dying before they get the chance to graduate.” Washington said.
He also says that he feels safe walking the streets because he well known and respected. At the same time if he could, he would leave Ypsilanti because he feels he can’t live to his full potential.
I then ask if he could, what would he change about Ypsilanti? He replied, “I would make it safer by adding more cameras and also create more job opportunities for youth.” Says Washington.
Yet he would only add jobs because he feels that keeping the youth more active with work would keep them off the streets also adding more attractions, like an amusement park, would help community build a better relationship with one another. Even though Ypsilanti is not the best city to live in, he still feels he can be successful if he stays in Ypsilanti.
“All around its a pretty good city, because I grew up here, and came out a good person. Even if there is a lot of bad people, it didn’t influence me to be a bad person, but motivate me to be a better person.” Lastly stated by Washington.
