Job Purpose
The academic specialist oversees and facilitates all academic-related activities at the designated location. This position ensures that all proposed outcomes and expectations for the tutoring program are met through managing the evaluation and assessment process. You manage all respective communication amongst site staff, volunteers and clients relevant to academics.
Duties and Responsibilities
Administration (30%)
Management
- Assist with continued training and development of volunteer tutors
- Plan, delegate and oversee duties and responsibilities of all academic-related staff/interns
- Review and report out student information (student profiles, grade reports, NWEA scores etc.)
Communication
- Communicate with volunteers weekly to ensure they are updated on tutoring plan for respective student
- Communicate with families (phone, email, newsletter) on a weekly, monthly or periodic basis to discuss topics pertaining to child’s academic performance
- Communicate with students’ teacher or school faculty on an ongoing basis
Program Coordination (70%)
Program Supervision
- Supervise all academic related activities on site
- Provide support as necessary to volunteer tutors on site
Academic Planning
- Develop weekly tutoring plans for volunteers to implement with their student
- Maintain and update student profiles
Assessment & Evaluation
- Track, monitor and evaluate student progress academically
- Assess and evaluate volunteer performance and development
Qualifications
Bachelors degree required; graduate degree preferred
At least 2-3 years minimum experience working in an educational environment required; leading, teaching or coordinating a youth program and/or classroom. Prior experience working with diverse populations preferred. Prior management experience preferred.
Preference given to candidates holding a reading and/or math endorsement
Candidate should be able to illustrate strength in the following areas: Written and verbal communication skills, critical reasoning and analytical skills, organization and time management
Candidates should be creative thinkers, passionate about youth, culturally responsive, show initiative and be adaptive to the work and program environment
Other information (i.e. personal background, characteristics, professional certification/endorsements) will be taken into consideration
Working conditions
In addition to normal working hours, this position requires you to work outside of normal work hours during evenings and ocassionally weekends. Will travel to and from program location and various meetings within 25 mile radius of program main office
