Our Vision

Provide a school-to-career pipeline for disadvantaged youth in Washtenaw County by 2022

Mentor2Youth is committed to impacting the futures of disadvantaged youth throughout Southeast Michigan by supporting them holistically through each phase of their lives. A 501(c)(3) organization founded in 2011, Mentor2Youth is based on a graduate research project conducted by a Michigan State University student that focused on the effects an educational mentoring program had on students’ school performance and personal behavior.

Working with several middle school boys, these students were provided with school supplies, academic resources, and a voice in what they thought was most important to learn about. A focus was placed on academic comprehension and life-skills development with these students. Incentives were provided to students who performed at a high level and participated frequently to ensure sustained motivation and accountability. In two months, a drastic change occurred in all these students. They were excelling academically across all core subjects and displayed improved behavior and self-confidence in contrast to their non-participating peers. In order to ensure the validity of the project, components such as educational resources, youth voice, and incentives were stripped away over the following months. Through the post-assessments conducted, it was found that students eventually reverted back to low performances in school, and their behavior became similar to that of peers who did not participate originally. Lastly, the community landscape illustrated that underperforming schools and neighborhoods in Ypsilanti lacked the necessary resources. As a result, Mentor2Youth was formed.

Since then, our school-to-career intervention programs, grounded in the principles of personal, academic and professional development, have expanded and served more than 450 boys and girls ages 8-18, throughout Southeast Michigan.  Over 25 high school students have been employed through Mentor2Youth, and 87% of our high school students have graduated on time and now attend a post-secondary institution.

Mentor2Youth currently serves 150+ youth annually throughout the school and summer period with through multiple programs with assistance from 30+ volunteers. Through constant innovation, Mentor2Youth has created an effective model for engaging youth. Partnered with 30+ agencies and organizations, Mentor2Youth has been able to provide critical resources for students in need of them most.
